Event description

Description

Brian Newman presents an illustrated biography of the life and work of Andrew Laing (1856 - 1931), who, after a meteoric rise to Engine Works Director at Govan - where he completely rebuilt the Engine Works and designed the most powerful reliable and efficient marine engines in the world - moved to Tyneside after disputatious events at Fairfield.

His greatest achievement was the design of the machinery for Mauretania (1907) sister to the Clyde-built Lusitania. Despite his commanding ability both as a designer and administrator, Andrew Laing remains the most elusive and obscure of the great marine engine builders of Britain at the apogee of its domination of world shipbuilding.

Dr Brian Newman has a background in marine engine building and his lifelong interest in the history of shipbuilding and marine engine building, has shed light on many previously unexplored by-ways in the history of this great industry, one of the results of which is tonight's illustrated presentation.
