Event description

Description

Come enjoy a day wandering in the mountains of Tibet with Milarepa, ‘yogi saint’ of the tenth century. To find great joy is the aim of Milarepa’s teachings, communicated to his followers through song. We will look at some of these verses, focusing on those that illuminate the great joy of the Dharma. We will also meditate together with inspiration from Milarepa.

From his early years in despair and misery, from engaging in acts of evil and destruction, Milarepa was able to turn his consciousness around and became one of the greatest enlightened teachers of Dharma in Tibet. What did that journey demand? What do we need to undertake on our journey from unhappiness to joy?

This day of study, discussion and meditation is open to all Dharma practitioners who are curious about Milarepa, the recluse, the joyful yogi. Experience in meditation is very helpful.

Lunch will be a potluck so please bring a vegetarian dish to share.

Led by Amala.

The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa was the text I never read back in college when it was assigned in my advanced Buddhism class. Over many decades I have wished to correct the lie I told the professor when I said I’d read it over vacation. Now I do read the songs of Milarepa and find there a reminder of the freedom and joy that is available to one who lets go fully, who sees entanglement a mile off and can remain radically open in all encounters.
