Event description
Anatomy Eats is where the culinary arts meet the medical arts.

About this event

**Tickets available with sliding scale pricing (pay what you are able)- virtual and in person!**

Anatomy Eats is a one-of-a-kind dinner collaboration between a chef and a medical doctor. Guests will learn about their own bodies by understanding the anatomy and physiology of the animals that we eat. This dinner event will both feed and educate, and guests will explore the body's wonders by eating delicious dishes prepared using internal organs and other unusual body parts.

For this iteration of Anatomy Eats, the focus will be on the heart, bone marrow, and the liver. Physician Jonathan Reisman will describe how these components work to keep our bodies healthy, while Chef Ari Miller will lead participants in preparing the following menu:

  • Beef heart tartare
  • Bone marrow and herb salad
  • Fried livers and seared mushrooms

This is a hybrid event, with limited in-person tickets available as a safety precaution to allow for physical spacing between guests. Onsite participants will enjoy the menu prepared by the chef in the Culinary Literacy Center at Parkway Central Library located in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia. Please note that all in person attendees must mask for this event, except while eating and drinking. All in person ticket holders will be contacted prior to the event with the most up to date safety protocols.

For those who would like to participate virtually, a list of ingredients and recipe packet will be provided in advance so that you can cook along from your home kitchen. We also welcome those who simply wish to watch and learn!

Chef Ari Miller co-owns the restaurant Musi, which opened in February 2019 to critical acclaim. Musi created a higher standard in the Philadelphia food world for using local, hyper-seasonal produce, cheeses and meats. In its first year Miller was named Best Chef by Philadelphia Magazine and Musi one of Eater's Best New Restaurants in the country. He is also the owner of Frizwit, the only Philly cheesesteak made from non-industrial ingredients, which Food & Wine heralded as the Best Dish of 2020.

A former journalist, Miller got his start in the professional kitchen in Tel Aviv, Israel. While there he became interested in whole-animal cooking by way of dishes like stuffed spleen, wine-poached tongue and brains on toast. He also served as a judge at the World Testicle Cooking Championship in Gornji Milanovac, Serbia.

Organizer Culinary Literacy Center

Organizer of Anatomy Eats with Chef Ari Miller and Dr. Jonathan Reisman

Every bite of food we eat tells a story. Here’s ours:

The Free Library is advancing literacy in Philadelphia in a unique and innovative way—with a fork and a spoon. Cooking and eating are educational acts and provide opportunities to learn math, science, languages, history and so much more. Using cooking as the vehicle for learning, the Culinary Literacy Center advances literacy through food and cooking around a communal table.

Opened in 2014, the Culinary Literacy Center is the first space of its kind in a public library and serves as a model for libraries worldwide. The Culinary Literacy Center is based in our kitchen classroom at Parkway Central, but we offer programming at nearly all of our neighborhood libraries. Culinary Literacy Center programs teach healthy cooking, build community, and promote civic dialogue.

Pull up a seat at our table and see what’s cooking at the Free Library of Philadelphia!
