ABOUT SOFIA GOODMAN
The Sofia Goodman Group is a modern jazz ensemble that performs the compositions of drummer and composer Sofia Goodman. The group has performed at The Elkhart Jazz Festival, The USM Jazz & Blues Festival, Rudy’s Jazz Room, The Kentucky Heritage Jazz Fest, and more. Goodman’s first album Myriad of Flowers was influenced by fusion, rock and jazz and was nominated for Best Jazz Album by NIMA in 2019. The Nashville Scene described Goodman’s work as “truly progressive and fundamentally jazz…a reason to be excited about the evolution of jazz in Music City.” The Manchester CT Jazz Festival dubbed her as “an artist whom you’ll certainly be hearing more of.” In 2020, she was nominated as Best Jazz Instrumentalist by NIMA and won The Pathways to Jazz Grant. Her upcoming album Secrets of the Shore, features saxophone virtuoso Joel Frahm. The music draws inspiration from Afro-Latin and Middle-Eastern styles. Goodman seeks to uplift listeners with story and inspires them with the performance of her ensemble.
Goodman was adopted from Lebanese and Puerto Rican parents into an Irish family in Boston, MA. She began playing drums in middle school and quickly developed an affinity for percussion. She was told that drums were a "man's instrument" on several occasions. Her passion for jazz was kindled by Esperanza Spalding, whom she met and performed with as a student in a Berklee College of Music summer program. Since coming to Nashville, she has performed with blues and soul legends Bobby Rush and Latimore. Her drumming at the Poretta Soul Festival in Italy with them was described as "brilliant" by Tony Tounce of Ace Records. She also has performed with world folk group HuDost, and recorded on a track with Jon Anderson of Yes on their album The Word Is... She started The Sofia Goodman Group in 2017 and is currently working with Nashville based musicians Dan Hitchcock, Alex Murphy, Leland Nelson, and Carlos Duran.
Dan Hitchcock is a saxophonist from Columbus and was one of eight semi-finalists selected to compete in the Michael Brecker International Saxophone Competition at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in 2019. He has worked with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Columbus Jazz Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony Pops. Alex Murphy is a pianist from Chicago who has performed with Nicholas Payton, Bobby Broom, Dezron Douglas, Pharezz Whitted, and Joe Grandsden. He also leads his own jazz trio. Bassist Leland Nelson, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, has worked with Didier Hoffman and has performed at the Detroit International Jazz Festival and at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Originally from Venezuela, Carlos Duran is a percussionist with a passion for modern and African drumming and dance.
