Weight stigmatization is often considered among the last socially acceptable forms of stigma and is frequently reported by persons with overweight and obesity. This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of weight-based stigmatization among adults and youth, and elucidate the biopsychosocial consequences. Settings in which individuals are most vulnerable to weight stigma will be discussed, and cultural differences in the nature and experience of weight stigma will be explored. Finally, practical tips for sensitively and effectively addressing weight with clients, promoting positive coping for those facing stigma, and reducing weight stigma will be provided.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe weight stigmatization and its effects on mental and physical health.

2. Identify settings in which persons with higher weight are most vulnerable to stigma and appreciate cultural differences in these experiences.

3. Demonstrate skill and sensitivity when addressing weight with clients, promote appropriate coping behaviors for those affected by weight stigma, and reduce weight stigma in both personal and professional settings.
