Event Details

The Shadowbox Theatre is pleased to announce the regional premiere of Justin Maxwell’s critically acclaimed play An Outopia for Pigeons. It’s a comedy about extinction and hopelessness. In the Absurdist style, Martha Washington—the historically real, last passenger pigeon—is building an outopia, a non-place, to hide the passenger pigeons. She’s assisted by an angry sperm whale named Charles Bronson—a whale so tough, they named the toughest actor of all time after him—and Cotton Mather, the Puritan Minister and witch dealer-with-er. All of them are hampered in their desires by a character simply called The Gourmand, who’s 7/8th omniscient, and has her own agenda, kinda. Things are eaten, stabbed, and loved as the outopia is built and expanded throughout the show.

An Outopia for Pigeons was originally commissioned by Swandive Theatre of Minneapolis, who gave the show its world premiere in November of 2013. The script received staged readings at the Veggie Stock reading series in Minneapolis, the Brick Oven series at The Brick Theatre in Brooklyn, and Southern Rep’s Pints and Plays series here in NOLA. Several productions of Outopia are scheduled around the country in the coming years, but the Shadowbox has the honor of presenting the show for the second time ever.

Matthew Everett, the theater critic for the Twin Cities Daily Planet, said An Outopia for Pigeons is “some of the most fun I’ve had in the theater in a long time.” Everett continues by saying:

An Outopia for Pigeons is not only hilarious, it’s also deeply moving. It’s a dizzying mindf**k that also touches your heart in unexpected ways. It’s foul-mouthed but also strangely innocent. It’s irreverent, at times even blasphemous, but also very spiritual. It ricochets back and forth between such diametric opposites that you’d think a spectator would get whiplash trying to follow it. But the tone of the production is always perfectly balanced and guides you gently through what one might fear are choppy waves.”

Everett’s full, and glowing, review can be found here: http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/arts/2013/11/15/theater-review-outopia-pigeons-swandive-theatre

Along with Everett’s praise, Maggie Scanlan the Artistic Director of Nightpath Theatre says the show is “honestly, one of the most delightful things I’ve ever seen!”

Outopia is recommended for mature audiences only.
