Event description

Description

In honor of September Recovery Month The Lynhall is hosting an event series that integrates science with soul. These events are focused on creating a deeper understanding of addiction, recovery and healing. We hope you will join us for a vibrant and engaging series.

We are thrilled to welcome Japan-based ceramics artist and teacher, Dave Pike to The Lynhall as part of our Nourish Series for this three hour introduction course to Kintsugi. This hands-on class provides a chance to work with real lacquer, instead of glue, to delicately bring your beloved heirloom pieces back to life. The course includes your own lacquer, tools and 150 page guide to take home and continue your journey with Kintsugi.

About Kintsugi:

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

About Dave Pike:

Dave Pike has lived in Japan since 1994. Most places that teach, even in Japan, use glue first and then cover that with lacquer. Dave uses lacquer from the beginning. Dave has done kintsugi professionally since 2008 and studied with an award winning lacquer artist for many years to get a deeper, more rounded understanding of lacquer, gold and silver, essential to doing kintsugi at a professional level. He has taught workshops and given talks internationally and in Japan, teaching people from Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and North America in his beginners 3 hour workshop, beginner/intermediate 3 day workshop, and advanced 10 day workshop.

He has presented at U.C. Berkeley and other venues and had numerous students with fellowships grants, several with Churchill Fellowship grants, and others who have taken the course for professional continuing education. Dave is also deeply involved in wood fired ceramics and Japanese antiques. His long experience, deep knowledge, and bilingualism makes him unique. workshops are rare, even in Japan, in that you work with lacquer from beginning to end.

Dave's goal is to teach you how to do kintsugi and answer your questions so you too will have enough confidence, hands on experience and knowledge to start on your own journey to understand a technique dating back to medieval times.
