About this Event

3-Hour Workshop

Saturday, June 6 – 10am-1pm

Description: This class introduces the student to the basics of working with Encaustic paints. Student will learn how to apply the wax to a panel, build up the layers of wax, use collage techniques and paint with colored hot wax and make their own colored wax.

The workshop will examine approaches to using photographs, magazine tears, tissue papers, and other objects that can be embedded into the wax. Even photographic elements can be combined with the medium to produce unique encaustic photography mixed media works. We will address heating, fusing, and manipulating wax, as well as discuss colors, brushes, and where to find materials.

Students will leave with a fundamental understanding of techniques of encaustic painting including melting, applying medium, mixing colors, embedding images, burnishing, etching and other techniques. Student will complete 1-3 completed pieces depending on complexity.

Tuition: $50 + $25 materials fee

Materials: Students should bring the following:

  • Soft smooth rags (cotton t-shirt fabric) for wiping
  • Photo-reference, if desired (NOTE: photos to be embedded into wax should be photocopied on porous paper, such a copy paper)
  • Other elements to embed, if desired (always porous) such as fibers/fabrics, newspapers, maps, scrapbook paper, drawings, doll clothes, lace, etc.
  • Textural items to embed (always porous), like pieces of cardboard, fibers/fabrics, meshes, doll clothes, lace etc.
  • Papers with fun textures, images, or patterns. Rice and tissue papers work very well.
