(CE 3)

Virginia Runko, PhD, CBSM, DBSM

Please Plan to Arrive by 8:30am. We will start promptly at 8:45am

Level: Introductory/intermediate workshop for mental health providers, trainees, or other clinicians encountering sleep and insomnia cases in their practice.

Estimated prevalence rates for insomnia symptoms and chronic insomnia are 30% and 10%, respectively. This rate is substantially higher in psychiatric populations with estimates of approximately 85% in depression and 70-90% in anxiety disorders. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) has a plethora of research demonstrating its effectiveness and is recommended as the first-line treatment for insomnia. This workshop will include an overview of several sleep disorders, insomnia specifically, and CBT-I for adults. CBT-I is a tailored, short-term, non-medication approach to treating insomnia and consists of various strategies including sleep restriction, stimulus control, sleep hygiene, and cognitive therapy. Each of these CBT-I strategies will be reviewed so that attendees can incorporate these techniques into their practices.

Learning Objectives

1. Define common sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, and insomnia.

2. Understand the 3P etiological model of insomnia, helping both clinicians and clients understand the different types of factors underlying insomnia.

3. Identify ways clients can obtain CBT-I and other sleep assessment (e.g., sleep study) if needed.

4. Execute the various components of CBT-I, including sleep restriction, stimulus control, and sleep hygiene.
