An Interfaith and Interactive Banquet: How to Discuss the Middle East
The Christian Science Organization of Berkeley and the M.T.O. Sufi Association® invites you to an Interfaith and Interactive Banquet to create a safe space in which our different faith communities in the Bay Area can discuss the diverse cultures, religions and history in the Middle East.
It is our hope that this space will bring us together to address the misconceptions, fear and "other-ing" of the region that is known as the Middle East through our influence, prayer and perspectives in our faith communities.
Through this space, we aim to learn from each other the best ways to promote understanding about the region and how we can help plant the seed of peace by spreading love and understanding in our own homes, communities and spheres of influence. Together participants will build the event by creating rules for dialogue, forming the discussion topics and organizing how to sustain the outcome of our collaboration (such as making a permanent space for such discussions or creating artwork to show others what we learned).
The banquet will also feature an interfaith keynote presentation by Janessa Gans Wilder, a CIA officer turned peace builder. She founded the Euphrates Institute after a 21-month tour in Iraq from 2003-2005, where she went from seeing Iraqis as the “enemy” to working with them to build democracy in the country.
The banquet is free of charge and includes lunch but requires participants to come with an open mind and willingness to engage in creative dialogue.
