24th and 25th April 2018, The Engine House, Fire Station, 76-78 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh College of Art.

Calling artists, therapists, community workers, educators and academics with an interest in alternative creativities! This two day program of workshops, exhibitions, films and talks will explore the connections between Scotland's Extraordinary Art and non-professional or ad-hoc creativity in other fields.

Come join us to consider how such raw and intriguing art practices inform wider issues of health, culture and environment in Scotland and further afield.

Confirmed speakers and workshop-leaders include:

  • Joyce Laing OBE, acclaimed art therapist, collector and exponent of Scotland's Art Extraordinary;
  • Artist Joanne B. Kaar;
  • Artist Cameron Morgan;
  • Artist Scott Swanson;
  • Dr. Cheryl McGeachan, Glasgow University;
  • Dr. Tony Lewis, Curator of Scottish History and Claire Coia, Glasgow Museums Resource Centre;
  • Dr. Peter Kellett, Newcastle University.

More Information:

Art Extraordinary describes the outstanding aesthetic achievements of people outwith the mainstream art industries (sometimes referred to as Art Brut or Outsider Art). This gathering links well-being, creativity and environment by highlighting and celebrating Scotland’s strengths in this creative field. An Extraordinary Gathering will explore the connections between this art and non-professional creativity in construction and the environment, and consider how such intriguing art practices inform wider issues of health and environment in Scotland.

Gathering artists from across Scotland with experience, skills and knowledge of this realm of creative production, this unique event will blend theory and practice and share innovative strategies for creative and community-engaged arts education. An Extraordinary Gathering will be accompanied by an exhibition of Scotland’s Extraordinary practice, that will subsequently tour the country, shedding light upon what drives artists to create these extraordinary things.
