Event description

Description

This event is SOLD OUT! With 200 names on the waitlist, we are not adding any more. If the situation changes we'll announce that both in this space and on Twitter: @thebookstall and Instagram: @the_book_stall.

Meet one of the stars of Netflix's overnight sensation Queer Eye! Tan France will be on-stage and in-conversation with a special celebrity guest. Each ticket holder will recieve a signed copy of Tan's new memoir, Naturally Tan, and get a chance to meet Tan and get a picture with him. With his signature with and style, Tan France's memoir Naturally Tan tells his origin story as the one of the few openly gay, South Asian men on television.

Tan France was a successful fashion designer behind-the-scenes for over 15 years, and then he stepped into the spotlight as the star of Emmy-winning makeover hit, and Netflix re-boot, "Queer Eye." Surrounded by an all new cast, France is the witty wardrobe wiz leading the charge in the fashion department, ready to make America fabulous again, one makeover at a time. This experience is so much more than just new clothes--to the British born fashion advisor, it's about real-life issues, changes, and acceptance on all sides.

The epitome of style and class, Tan is the creative mind behind successful brands including the popular ladies clothing lines Kingdom & State and Rachel Parcell, Inc. Prior to his success as a designer, he spent his summers working in his grandfather's denim factory while he secretly enrolled in fashion college in preparation to start a new chapter as a design star.

In his heartfelt, funny, touching memoir, Naturally Tan, he tells his origin story for the first time. With his trademark wit, humor, and radical compassion, Tan reveals what it was like to grow up gay in a traditional South Asian family, as one of the few people of color in South Yorkshire, England. He illuminates his winding journey of coming of age, finding his voice (and style!), and how he finally came out to his family at the age of 34, revealing that he was happily married to the love of his life--a Mormon cowboy from Salt Lake City.

In Tan's own words, "The book is meant to spread joy, personal acceptance, and most of all understanding. Each of us is living our own private journey, and the more we know about each other, the healthier and happier the world will be."

Publishers Weekly calls Naturally Tan, "Feisty and affecting," and add: "France's charming anecdotes and candid opinions exhibit no shortage of humor, and fans of the TV personality will revel in the peek into his colorful history."

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Parking can be tricky, if possible we recommend taking the Red Line (Addison Stop), Brown Line (Southport stop), or the Irving Park, Addison, or Clark Street buses.

Southport is a metered parking street. Free street parking is available on and west of Ashland Ave (two blocks west of the theatre) and north of Irving Park. There is a parking lot at nearby Blaine Elementary and valet parking at the Mercury Theatre and Grassroots Restaurant.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Please do bring a printed ticket--it makes things much easier on us all! If you don't have access to a printer, we can deal with it. Be sure you know who ordered your ticket and that person's last name.
