Event description

Description

“Only when I actually entered a refuge and found openness to start a dialogue, did I begin to imagine creating work that could connect women whose lives had been mostly deeply impacted, with women who could listen and learn from them.” Susan Meiselas, 2017

Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas will introduce A Room of Their Own, her latest work with Multistory. After her talk there will be a panel discussion with project collaborators; a Q&A and food and music.

During 2015 and 2016, arts organisation, Multistory, and Magnum photographer, Susan Meiselas, collaborated with women who were living in a Black Country refuge. The resulting publication, A Room of Their Own, shares the women’s experiences of domestic abuse and the process of entering refuge using photographs, first hand testimonies and original artworks.

To mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November 2017, and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (25 Nov – 10 Oct) we have teamed up again to develop a series of unique ‘pop-up’ exhibitions, events, workshops and talks. Together with our Black Country partners, we hope to raise the issue of domestic violence, inspire activism and encourage people to purchase A Room of Their Own, proceeds of which will go to women in refuge in the Black Country.

Susan Meiselas, born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1948, received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MA in visual education from Harvard University. Susan joined Magnum Photos in 1976 and has worked as a freelance photographer since then. Covering many subjects and countries, from war to human rights issues and from cultural identity to the sex industry, Meiselas uses photography, film, video and sometimes archive material. She is best known for her coverage of the insurrection in Nicaragua and her documentation of human rights issues in Latin America. Meiselas has had one-woman exhibitions in Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, and her work is included in collections around the world.

*** 4 – 5pm Arrive early for a guided tour of special installation of at West Bromwich indoor market, which includes two narrative video works of photographs, first-hand testimonies, collages and drawings from A Room of Their Own. This is a smaller version of the installation at major retrospective of Susan Meiselas’ work at the Jeu de Paume from 6 February to 20 May 2018.

A Room of Their Own is a partnership project with Multistory and Creative Black Country (as part of the Arts Council of England’s Creative People and Places Programme). Multistory is supported by Sandwell council and Arts Council England.
