Description

Please join us for a special concert featuring Radim Zenkl and Danny Knicely. Early Bird $15 / Door $18

Radim Zenkl: Mandolin, Mandola, Tinwhistle, Ethnic Flutes, Didgeridoo, Vocal

Danny Knicely: Mandolin, Guitar, Fiddle, Vocal

Radim Zenkl from Czech Republic is revered as one of the world’s greatest mandolinists and is a U.S. National Mandolin Champion. He has extended the technical possibilities of the mandolin by inventing a masterful technique, the “Zenkl style,” in which a single mandolin sounds like two. Radim performs original music crossing the tracks of folk, string jazz, new age, bluegrass, flamenco, gypsy, Irish, and classical music, combined with Czech and eastern European traditional songs and instrumentals.

“Radim has reinvented the mandolin in several different ways”- David Grisman

“Imaginative and great”- Jerry Garcia

Radim is joined by Danny Knicely who has the uncanny ability to thrive in and elevate most any musical situation. As a multi-instrumentalist, Danny has won many awards for his mandolin, guitar, and fiddle expertise, including first place in the mandolin contest at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival. He has shared his music and collaborated with musicians in over a dozen countries spanning four continents and appears on hundreds of recordings.

Danny is also musical director for the Mountain Music Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving traditional musicians worldwide, and he plays a major role in a feature length documentary film called “The Mountain Music Project”. The film follows two Appalachian musicians on a journey through the Himalayas of Nepal and the mountains of Virginia while they experience the extraordinary connections between these two mountain cultures.

This event is sponsored by the Virginia Folklife Program.
