Event description

Description

On September 1, 2018, the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center (BMCC) will host a special fundraising dinner gala and tribute to Bonita resident Jahja Ling. The dinner gala celebration will be held at the San Diego Country Club and features conversations with Maestro Ling as well as a new artwork of the Maestro's hands.

For thirteen years, Jahja Ling was the music director and conductor for the San Diego Symphony. During his celebrated career, he performed for England’s Queen Elizabeth II and collaborated with Whitney Houston, Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, Itzhak Perlman, and others.

Jahja Ling fell in love with the peaceful community in Bonita, California. At his home, he enjoys watching the sunsets in his backyard. He says, “Every evening brings a different sunset to enjoy”. When he is not conducting, he enjoys bicycle rides with his beautiful wife or listening to Katy Perry, Beyoncé and Ariana Grande with his teenage girls.

Ling was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and began to play the piano at age 4. At age 17 he received a Rockefeller award scholarship and went to study at The Juilliard School in New York City. At Juilliard he earned a master's degree. Ling then went to study orchestral conducting at the Yale School of Music and received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. He is the first and only conductor of Chinese descent to serve as music director of a major U.S. orchestra.

The Bonita Museum and Cultural Center will host an exhibition about the life of Jahja Ling from September 1 - October 6, 2018. Exhibitions at the museum are free to the public. The museum is open 10am to 4pm, Wednesday thru Saturday. Proceeds from the event benefit programming at the museum, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
