Event description

Description

In her 20-year career, critically acclaimed vocalist Jane Monheit's silky phrasing and knack for storytelling have earned two Grammy® nominations. The cool-toned chanteuse from Long Island has had plenty of milestone moments in establishing herself as one of today’s best and most important vocalist-musicians.

A favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds, Jane is known for her sincere and romantic interpretations of songs. She has released 12 albums and toured some of the world’s most revered jazz venues.

At the young age of 20, Jane became first runner-up in the 1998 Thelonious Monk Institute’s vocal competition behind the late, great Teri Thornton. Soon after, Jane released her stunning debut album, “Never Never Land,” which was voted Best Recording Debut by the Jazz Journalists Association and stayed on the Billboard jazz chart for a year. Subsequent albums either charted high, or in several cases, debuted at number one. Her latest album, “The Songbook Sessions: Ella Fitzgerald” is a rich collaboration with Nicholas Payton.

Jane considers Ella Fitzgerald as her foremost influence. Her other influences are Carmen McRae, Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé and Irene Kral, groups Take Six, New York Voices, as well as non-jazz artists Barbara Cook, and singer/songwriters Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell.
