Eben Alexander III, MD, has been a renowned academic neurosurgeon for the last 25 years, including 15 years at Brigham & Women's and the Children's Hospitals, as well as Harvard Medical School in Boston. Over his academic career he authored and co-authored over 150 chapters and papers in peer-reviewed journals and made over 200 presentations at conferences and medical centers around the world. As a scientist and physician, he thought he knew where consciousness resided and how the brain and mind worked. A transcendental Near-Death Experience (NDE). in which he was driven to the brink of death and spent a week in deep coma from an inexplicable brain infection changed all that - completely!
He was shocked to find the hyper-reality of that spiritual realm, which had been reported in NDEs over many centuries. He spent two and a half years reconciling his rich spiritual experience with contemporary physics and cosmology. His spiritual experience is totally consistent with the leading edges of scientific understanding today. Dr. Alexander offers that together, science and spirituality will thrive in a symbiosis offering the most profound insight into fundamental truth, yielding unimaginable power. Dr. Alexander now believes that the spiritual realm is real and a seamless blending of science and spirituality is on the horizon. The keystone is in the global progression of individual conscious awakening.
With his amazing book 'Proof of Heaven' a runaway bestseller, both in the U.S. and abroad, and after his truly astounding Near-Death Experience (NDE) account has appeared in the NY Times and Newsweek, he's done extensive TV interviews with Oprah, Dr. Oz, Katie Couric, Larry King Live, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America, Nightline, and others. Meet the skeptic who now believes heaven exists -- and he can prove it! Hear about his near-death experience and why it turned him into a believer.
IANDS Santa Barbara is just one of the over 60 groups worldwide that represent the International Association of Near-Death Studies, which was founded by John Audette, Dr. Raymond Moody, Dr. Kenneth Ring, Dr. Bruce Greyson, and others in the 1970s to build global awareness and understanding of near-death studies. IANDS SB was formed in August 2011 by Barbara Bartolome, with assistance from James Kwako MD, William Peters MFT, Peter Wright CPLT CHT LBLT, Ness Carroll PhD, and James Smallwood MA, to provide support and community for near-death experiencers and their families, educate about near-death and other spiritually transformative experiences, and to lead the way in building awareness and understanding of near-death experiences within the medical, mental health, hospice, and caregiver communities, and with the general public.
The Shared Crossing Research Initiative (SCRI) conducts research on the profound and healing experiences known as the Shared Death Experience (SDE). SCRI, a nonprofit arm of the Shared Crossing Project (SCP), is a collaboration with the Family Therapy Institute (FTI). The mission of the SCP is to raise awareness and educate people about the profound and healing experiences that are available to the dying and their loved ones. The Shared Death Experience is a term coined by Raymond Moody, MD, to identify an experience that occurs between a person dying and his/her loved one(s). The loved one(s), who is in good health, experiences some of the dying person's first moments after death. To be clear, the loved one(s) shares in the initial experiences immediately following death (the afterlife). Dr. Moody's research indicates that the SDE has characteristics similar to those of the near-Death Experience (NDE). While Dr. Moody's research has identified the qualities of the SDE, the frequency and cause of this experience are relatively unstudied to date.
