Event description

Description

Clive Ponting, a senior civil servant in the Margaret Thatcher era, was at the centre of the controversy over the sinking of the Argentine warship 'General Belgrano'. He was arrested under the Official Secrets Act following the leaking of documents to Tam Dalyell MP, put on trial, and - despite direction from the judge to find him guilty - acquitted by the jury.

He later became a Reader in Politics and International Relations at Swansea University, and has published 15 books on world history, environmental history and twentieth century politics.

Clive is now an SNP member and ardent Scottish Independence supporter and has in recent years moved to the Scottish Borders.

His talk will be a fascinating opportunity to hear the viewpoint of someone who has worked within the British establishment and discover how he arrived at his position on the constitutional question.

Admission is free, all are welcome - but booking is essential.
