Event Details

First Coast Technical College welcomes nationally acclaimed culinarian, television personality and New York Times best-selling author, Chef Jeff Henderson, on Wed., Feb. 20th at 7 p.m.

FCTC’s evening with Chef Jeff will feature his rendition of how his discovery of food was the catalyst for professional success, and will be followed by a signing of his bestselling memoir, COOKED.

All proceeds benefit FCTC’s Fresh Starts in Culinary Arts, which will provide training for our homeless neighbors who desire to pursue their dreams in the culinary world. Graduates of Fresh Starts will be credentialed and ready for employment in food services, or they may decide to transfer into FCTC’s award-winning School of Culinary Arts, for advanced training.

While there can only be one Chef Jeff, who knows how many locals will be inspired to follow in his footsteps and make their mark in the food industry, as they write their own stories of personal triumph over adversity? The answer to this may lie in the delivery of innovative opportunities, such as Fresh Starts, and the outpouring of support from a community that catches the contagious impact of Chef Jeff’s belief in the yearning and ability of the human spirit to rise to the pinnacle of excellence.

This intimate evening with Chef Jeff, in FCTC’s Conference Center, is available to 400 guests. Tickets are $20 and Sponsorships are available. For tickets, visit www.fctc.edu or contact Jill Miller at 907-547-3386 or jill.miller@fctc.edu.

First Coast Technical College Education Foundation

In 2012, plans began for the launch of the First Coast Technical College Education Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to assist students of First Coast Technical College (FCTC) in their pursuit of excellence by supplementing traditional funding. To that end, the Foundation seeks to attract private funds, grants and resources which will complement, enhance and enrich FCTC programs and provide opportunities for students. In doing so, the First Coast Technical College Education Foundation will help ensure that area students have access to a high-quality education that prepares them for today’s workforce.

The Foundation also oversees the successful Fresh Starts in Culinary Arts program. This program was developed in cooperation with St. Augustine’s St. Francis House, a temporary home for members of the City’s hungry and homeless population. This four week culinary arts program is designed to provide residents of the St. Francis House with relevant training and certifications that will make them immediately employable in foodservice, the third fastest growing occupation in Florida. Enrolled students train in St. Francis House’s kitchen, through a mix of hands-on and classroom instruction, provided by FCTC Chef Instructor Phil Brown.

The new program was created thanks to the generous donations of the St. Augustine Historic Inns Holiday Tour, Cross Creek Church and the St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival. After a year of planning, the program officially launched in August of 2013, and graduated a class of six students – three who have found employment in the restaurant industry and three who are enrolling in FCTC’s School of Culinary Arts.

To meet its goals, the Foundation hopes to provide scholarships for students in need and technology grants to programs for investment in tools that will better prepare FCTC students for tomorrow’s workforce. Success will depend on the partnership of our community. Many opportunities are available for individuals, organizations and businesses interested in helping us plan for the future relevancy and vibrancy of the College.
