Dr. Leela P. Honeysucker-Miller, ED.D

Leela is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her roots however are deeply embedded in the soil of Canton Mississippi. At the time of Emancipation, when the enslaved individuals were gathered to hear the announcement of freedom, Leela’s Great, Great Grandfather looked up to the rooftop of the slave cabin, and saw Honeysuckle vines growing; he denounced the name of the slave master (Johnston) and took the name of the flower as the family name.  Leela is the 5th of seven children born to Isaac Benjamin and Maggie Bell Greenwood Honeysucker III. An Educator, Historian, Leela has taught History in the Public School, and has also served as an  Administrator in the Public Schools. She has lectured in some of the most prestige’s universities in this country and abroad. She has guest lectured at Amherst, Yale, Brown, Princeton, Harvard, Oxford, and The University of Virginia.  She has taught at The University of North Texas, Lewis University, Benedictine University, Mountain View College, Richland College, Houston Community College, Austin Community College, Governors State University and at the Harold Washington College. Leela is a Gilder/Lerhman Fellow of American History.  Leela has for many years, performed solo concerts of Negro Spirituals, in many venues throughout this country and abroad. She has served as the Associate Conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Student Conductor Lane College, and many church and other civic chorales. Her formal education stems from three Historically Black Colleges, Lane College, Tennessee State University and Texas Southern University. She is also a graduate of Marian College and Argosy University. Leela’s current project, The Negro Spiritual Project, “A Lost Art”, is a documentary for PBS. Some of the persons with whom you will see in this documentary include: Louis Gossett Jr., Rev. Clay Evans, J. Anthony Brown, Nephew Tommy,Walter Whitman, Byron Cage,Spike Lee, Della Reese, Danny Glover, Hank Aaron, Martin Luther King III, Oleta Adams, The Sounds of Blackness, Take 6, over 50 Concert Choirs comprised primarily of Historically Black Colleges and Universities from across the United States, only to name a few. In education, the issue which is most pressing for Leela is the lack of motivation and the failure of so many African American Male students. This is an issue of which she is addressing in her documentary. By the conclusion of this documentary, it is her hope to ensure that the Negro Spirituals and the History of former enslaved individuals are preserved and utilized through the usage of religious communities, with a primary focus on the Black Church; and that she will have possessed a deeper grasp of analyzing the problems and issues that affect African American Male students, and develop ways to combat their situations.
