Event description

Description

AWiLL is pleased and proud to Connect you to an evening of conversation with Elexis Schloss. Elexis is a beloved and respected icon for her volunteerism and work in the areas of human rights and equality. Her impact is felt not only in Edmonton but around the world.

Our session will be conversation style, moderated by Judy Piercey. Judy herself has had an amazing career as a writer and journalist, first with the Canadian Press and CBC, and later as Managing Director for CBC Edmonton and Northern Alberta.

About Elexis

Elexis has used her creative talents and entrepreneurial savvy to make a difference as a leader and mentor to countless women. Her career as an Interior Designer, combined with her love of fashion, art, and food, spurred her to design and manufacture sweaters and later chocolate truffles. She has always applied her business acumen to solving problems. For example, when she learned that women from rural Alberta travelling to Edmonton for cancer treatment were placed under extra stress due to a lack of accommodation, Elexis spearheaded the creation of Compassion House. Now, women undergoing cancer treatment have a warm and supportive environment away from home. Each year the women are the stars of the runway in “Fashion with Compassion,” the annual fundraiser that continues to support Compassion House.

With her husband, Dr. Eric Schloss, Elexis volunteered in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Haiti following the earthquake. Again, she saw a need and applied her artistic and entrepreneurial skills to meet that need. She designed sandals to protect the feet of children and adults in Africa forced to walk miles for food and water. And she created a comic book, to help children encourage their mothers to get tested for HIV.

Elexis has been recognized with several awards, including Philanthropist of the Year, Global Woman of Vision, Edmonton Journal Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, Elder Status (Aboriginal Women’s Professional Association), Queens Diamond and Jubilee Medals and the Order of Canada. Following her appointment to The Order of Canada, she was appointed as Presiding Official at Citizenship Court and has given citizenship to more than 2000 new Canadians. Her one philosophy is always that of gratitude for living in Canada and feels deeply that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

AWiLL is absolutely thrilled to have Elexis share her story with us. Her kind and caring manner, along with her sense of humour and humility are remarkable! Definitely an evening you do not want to miss.
