Summary of talk
An English Future: E Pluribus Unum or Ex Uno Multa?*
Bill Clinton’s team gave the world the motto “It’s the economy, stupid” as the platform for one of the most successful political machines ever created. Yet on June 23, many Britons – and the voters of England in particular responded to the call to “take our country back”, proving that on this occasion at least identity trumped economics.
So what should that country of the future look like? Most of all, how should we manage the many competing identities vying for pre-eminence within our national boundaries - geographic, cultural, confessional, racial, not to mention political? Can England get to the second half of the century as an integrated nation that illustrates the motto “Out of many, one”? Or is it heading for a splintered future whose slogan might be : “Out of one, many”?
*Out of many, one? Or out of one, many?
