Event description

Description

On Saturday, April 27 from 10am - 2:30pm join Cary Institute Wildlife Biologist Mike Fargione and Dutchess Land Conservancy Ecologist Julie Hart for "An Ecological Approach to Forest Stewardship."

Forests provide important services such as clean air and water, flood control, natural cooling, supplemental income, scenic views, and sites for outdoor recreation. Did you know that three-quarters of New York's forested lands are privately owned? This means that anyone who owns or manages private forested lands can influence the heath and future of this important resource for everyone.

If you own forested lands, the way you manage them can have an impact on everyone around you. Our upcoming workshop will give you the tools you need to understand the impacts of your management decisions on forest health and function, and put you on the path to wise stewardship of this critical resource.

The workshop will explore the basics of forest ecology and stewardship using a combination of classroom presentations and hands-on activities. Attendees will learn about the ecology and history of local forests, how to create a simple forest inventory, and how to identify threats to forest health, with a focus on using an ecological approach to set management goals. The workshop is designed for anyone interested in learning about forest stewardship for the small backyard woodlot or privately owned larger woodland.

We will be spending time outdoors doing non-strenuous fieldwork, so please wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes, and bring raingear if necessary.

The program will begin at Cary Institute East/Carriage House, 2917 Sharon Turnpike (Rte. 44) in Millbrook, New  York. Registration is required. The number of participants is limited. The event is cosponsored by Dutchess Land Conservancy.
