Event description

Description

General Admission good for all three sets starting at 9:30pm.

Ayumi Ishito was born and raised in Ishikawa, Japan. At the age of 4, Ayumi began her musical studies on classical piano. At the age of 19, she began playing tenor saxophone in a student big band at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. In 2007, Ayumi received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from Berklee in 2010, Ayumi moved to New York where she immediately found herself immersed in the jazz scene. She is a regular member of The Jazz Thieves, Marc Edwards and Slipstream Time Travel, Leon Lacey’s Freshly Orchestrated, Eighty-pound Pug, and Platypus Revenge. Ayumi has been leading her own group since 2011 performing at numerous popular venues in New York City including Rockwood Music Hall, Pete’s Candy Store, Sunnyvale, Mercury Lounge, and Muchmore’s. In December of 2016, Ayumi released her debut album “View From A Little Cave”. The album is receiving a lot of attention from home and abroad and has been featured on national and international music blogs including Bandcamp Daily, Rock the Body Electric, Divide and Conquer, Music Explosion (Russia), Axun Arts (Poland), Time Machine Music (Serbia), and Disk Union (Japan). The album has also been featured on multiple radio stations around the world, such as KTRU, WMSE, PBS, and CJRU.

The name Votive Crown is meant to evoke imagery of a crown offering on an altar, a practice during the middle ages which symbolized devotion to one's deep beliefs. Vocalist Melissa Orr draws from singer-songwriters of the 70's, progressive rock and soul, while the quartet creates a wall of texture and syncopation roiling underneath. Their debut album is slated for release in Winter 2018.

Matthew Albeck began studying music at the age of 11. He moved to New York City in 2008 to pursue jazz studies and played with many great musicians. In 2011, Matthew attended the Queens College Jazz Masters Program. He formed his new band Oceans (featuring Lonnie Solaway on drums, Ben Swan on violin, and Marty Isenberg on electric bass) in 2017 to create a group in which his skills as an improviser and composer would shine against a strong backdrop of songwriting, group interplay, and a love of guitar music that has inspired him since his youth. “Oceans is a psychedelic journey into a supernatural land of blues, rock, and jazz. My songs tell a story, and so does my guitar.”
