Event description

Description

This session will discuss healthcare, innovation and the challenges created by an ageing population. Globally, the 60+ age demographic is the fastest growing population group. It is trends like this that give new focus to the challenges faced by leaders within housing, healthcare and transport, and ask how we can innovate to future-proof society?

By mid-2039, more than 1 in 12 of the UK population is projected to be aged 80 or over. Newcastle is ahead of this curve; it is the only UK city other than London that has chosen to be part of a worldwide movement, Aging 2.0, which supports innovators taking on the biggest challenges and opportunities within ageing.

The city is already making strides within housing, healthcare and transport with initiatives such as Newcastle City Futures’ ‘Future Homes’ project, aimed at providing supportive homes for everyone at each stage of life. What does an ageing population mean for the housing market?

The National Innovation Centre for Ageing will help to establish the world’s premier centre for healthy ageing and living, leading the way in healthcare. What is changing in the global smart healthcare market to prepare us for the population shift?

The Newcastle Helix has already begun creating an integrated transport system that is green, efficient and versatile. What innovations should cities be looking at within transport?
