Each year the Southwest Chapter of AMWA hosts the John P. McGovern Award Banquet and Lecture. AMWA Southwest will be presenting the 2018 McGovern Award to Dr. Helen Valier (see below).

The festivities will begin at 6PM with complimentary beer, wine, and hors d'oeuvres. Admission also includes the buffet dinner, which will begin at 7PM and consist of multiple Treebeards specialities, including vegetarian options.

Dr. Valier will begin her discussion at approximately 8PM with a lecture entitled, “Cancer, Men, and Medicine: What Cancer's Past Can Tell Us about the Future of Academic Medicine.’”

A question and answer session will follow the lecture.

Seating is limited, so please register early.

About the award recipient: Helen Valier, PhD, is a researcher, educator, and author. She is director of the Medicine & Society Program in the Honors College at the University of Houston.

As a researcher, she studies the history of contemporary biomedicine, specifically as it relates to cancer research, treatment, and policy in the United States and Europe. She believes that the way to a better future lies in a better understanding of our collective past.

As an educator, she teaches an array of topics across the medical humanities curriculum, including surveys of the history of medicine. She also teaches specialized upper-division classes in the history and philosophy of science, technology, and medicine on topics such as epidemics, public health, cancer, high technology, and the politics of health reform. In appreciation of her contributions and service at the University of Houston, she has received the Provost Faculty Advising Award for Excellence, a Distinguished Service Award, and a Faculty Development Initiative Award. She was also a recipient of the T.L.L. Temple Foundation Award for Early Program Development.

Her book, Cancer, Men, and Medicine: A History of Prostate Cancer, was published in 2016. She has two forthcoming books, The Oxford Handbook of the History of American Medicine (Oxford University Press, to be published in 2018), and Cancer Inc.: The Business of Oncology in the Era of Managed Care (in progress).
