Program Description:

Research shows that adaptive cycling using therapeutic tricycles can positively impact the physical, social, and emotional aspects of the lives of individuals living with disabilities. AMBUCS offers the Amtryke program with 20+ therapeutic tricycle frames and 50+ adaptive accessory options to allow nearly anyone to reap the benefits of adaptive cycling. This course will serve as a training for licensed PTs and OTs, PTAs and COTAs (non-evaluation content) for appropriately evaluating and fitting individuals with disabilities for Amtryke adaptive therapeutic tricycles. There will be both didactic and hands-on learning lead by a trained instructor with extensive experience with this program.

Goals:

For attendees to be educated the benefits of adaptive cycling using therapeutic tricycles

For attendees to be educated on the available frames and accessories available through the AmTryke program to allow them to appropriately evaluate an individual with a disability for this equipment based on the environment of use, safety, neurological, and structural limitations.

For attendees to experience a live evaluation and custom fitting with an experienced therapist

For attendees to understand how to submit a recommendation for an Amtryke therapeutic tricycle for charitable support through the AMBUCS organization’s Wish List program.

Sample Course Schedule:

Live demo portion at end of the day will vary based on number of live demos

8:00 – 9:45 AM (1.75 hours)

Power Point presentation with demonstration of frames and adaptive accessories

  • Research for benefits of adaptive cycling

  • Frame selection problem solving based on intended use, safety and neurological and structural factors

  • Accessory selection based on needs for each

  • Measurement and adjustment lab

  • Orientation to paperwork

9:45AM – 10:00AM (0.25 hours)- Break

  • Frames and accessories available for hands-on trial by attendees

10:00 AM – 10:30 AM (0.5 hours):

  • Case studies

10:30 AM – 11:00AM (0.5 hours):

  • Power Point presentation of fitting process and checklist

11:00 AM- 11:30 AM: (0.5 hours)

  • Instructor led demo of evaluation and fitting

11:30 AM – 12: 30 PM Lunch

1:00 PM – 3:30 PM (2.5 hours)

  • Hands-on eval and fitting in small groups with live demos

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Utilize appropriate measurement techniques

2. Select appropriate frame based on the following

A. Primary Usage: clinical or recreational

B. Impairments with safety as the leading consideration

C. Size

3. Select appropriate accessories

A. Support needed for each of the following:

i. trunk/pelvis,

ii. upper extremities

iii. lower extremities

B. Caregiver supports needed

4. Complete required paperwork appropriately

A. Assessment form

B. Waiver and request

C. Determine source of funding

D. Wish List logistics

5. Determine logistics of bike assembly

6. Fit bike to rider to maximize independence

A. Appropriately utilize the fitting checklist

B. Troubleshoot if something is incorrect

C. Understand re-order/exchange process

7. Follow-up appropriately

A. Requesting family feedback

B. Submitting feedback to AMBUCS Resource Center

C. Therapist follow-up
