TITLE: Self Care and Self Management Techniques of the Hand for the Massage Therapist

Friday night 2-6 pm What causes Hand Problems?

Goals of this session: Massage Therapists are at high risk for repetitive injuries and osteoarthritis which
can lead to a short professional life. In this session we will explore the anatomy of the hand , thumb,
wrist and forearm and how the mechanics of the muscle-tendon units provide support, or with improper
mechanics, can lead to degenerative changes. Specific diagnoses will be discussed, as well as
preventive strategies and treatment options for the massage therapist to manage their own hands for a
life time of healthy practice.

This course is lecture and question/answer only.

Saturday 8-12 and 1:30-5:30

Lab: Techniques for self treatment and exchanges with other massage therapists

Goals of this session: The instructor will demonstrate specific manual therapy techniques for common
hand issues including CMC osteoarthritis of the thumb, Heberden’s nodules of the DIP’s, Bouchard’s
nodules at the PIP’s, nerve issues, and tendon issues. We will work in small groups to practice on each
other, as well as having the instructor work on participants to demonstrate specific techniques to manage hand issues. Modalities will be demonstrated that facilitate soft tissue changes. Kinesiotaping techniques and splints for specific diagnoses will be covered. These hands-on sessions build on the material presented on Friday night, with the hope that you will have the theory and the techniques for self care and prevention when you return to your own massage therapy practice.
