Topic: Explaining Psychosocial Hazards: Best Practices for Alberta Trucking Companies

Trucking companies and other Albertan employers have heard a lot about mental health, psychological safety, and psychosocial hazards. The COVID-19 pandemic has given these topics considerable attention in mainstream media. But this focus is not new; before these recent events, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation required employers to consider psychosocial hazards in their safety programs. This talk - intended specifically for trucking companies and employers with fleets - will explain what psychosocial hazards are, what the legislation says, and present basic steps companies of all sizes can take to address risks in this area.

Presenter: Dave Eliniski - Industry Advisor, Safety and Compliance (AMTA)

About Dave: Dave Elniski is the Safety and Compliance Industry Advisor at AMTA. In this role, he offers professional advice to both carriers and individuals on occupational health and safety issues, as well as matters pertaining to transportation-specific safety and compliance. Dave started in commercial transportation doing dock-and-local work, before hitting the road as a long-haul flatbed driver. Before moving to AMTA, he worked in fleet safety management for an Alberta-based carrier. Dave is one of the early Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP) designation-holders and holds the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation. He is currently working on his MA degree, focusing on safety and psychosocial factors in the commercial transportation industry. Dave researched and authored "Psychosocial Hazard Control in Alberta's Trucking Industry," AMTA's comprehensive guide for addressing psychosocial hazards in trucking company safety programs. Dave is also an active reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces.
