AmpSurf™ is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to Promote, Inspire, Educate, and Rehabilitate (PIER) all people with disabilities and their families through adaptive surfing and other outdoor activities.

Adaptive Surfing and Surf Therapy is growing around the world as an effective way to rehabilitate from mental health, physical disabilities and injuries. As Surf Therapy continues to grow it is important that any instructor entering the water to assist these individuals have knowledge of what challenges different disabilities present and how to adapt to make sure that the experience is safe and positive. The classroom portion of the training will cover various disabilities and how to create a positive and safe experience for participants taking part in Surf Therapy. Everything learnt in the classroom is put into practice in beach training and evaluation.

  • Classroom sessions are from 04:00 PM - 07:00 PM (PST)
  • Beach training and assessment will be schedule by location (NE, NY, CA, OR)
  • Ocean/Surf experience is highly recommended
  • You must be at least 16 years old

Topics Included in the training:

  • Working with individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress and other mental health and physical disabilities including but not limited to: autism, amputations, paraplegia, blindness and traumatic brain Injury (TBI)
  • How to introduce those living with disabilities to the healing power of the ocean and adaptive surf therapy.
  • Practical Beach/In -water instruction (also serves as a practical application and qualification evaluation by Lead Instructor staff)

EACH PARTICIPANT WILL BE PRESENTED WITH AN ISA CERTIFICATE, RED AMPSURF INSTRUCTORS RASH VEST AND HAT WHEN CERTIFIED.

STUDENT INSTRUCTORS

Thank you for expressing interest to help us bring the healing power of the ocean and adaptive surfing to our participants. Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience but it is a commitment that you have to honor. We assure you that if you put in the effort you will have one of the greatest experiences of your life.

Qualifying Criteria

  • Physically able to control a surfboard and participant in the surf zone
  • Able to swim and tread water
  • Ability to work in the water with students for up to six hours
  • Able to work with various type of personalities
  • At least 16 years or older

Requirements for becoming an AmpSurf/ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor:

  • Complete ASICP classroom instructor training classes. You must be there for the entire class!
  • Complete and submit proof of core competencies as detailed in the course. In addition the following must be done to instruct at an AmpSurf event;
  • Participant must be in possession of a complete Adult/child CPR with First Aid certification offered through the Red Cross or equivalent. Copies of certificates must be submitted before Instructing at an AmpSurf event.
  • Demonstrate significant experience and knowledge of surfing and working with people with disabilities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a team player, take direction/feedback, nurture a supportive, enriching environment, and be able to get along with a variety of people & personalities.
  • Renewal/refresher course is required every 3 years.

Course Outcomes

  • Able to demonstrate significant experience and knowledge of surfing and working with people with disabilities.
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of working with people with disabilities
  • Show how to safely and effectively transfer a non-ambulatory person to and from the beach and a beach-wheelchair to and from a surf craft.
  • Be able to work as a team player, take direction/feedback, nurture a supportive, enriching environment, and be able to get along with a variety of people & personalities.
  • Ensure participants have a good experience in the ocean and return home safely
  • Have a basic understanding and knowledge of how to setup and conduct an adaptive surf therapy event.
  • Have a general understanding and basic knowledge of a vareity of conditions covered in the manual and knowledge of how to work with/in various situations and common challenges that those issues may cause in a beach/surf setting.
