Event description

Updated May 20, 2016

This summer, join giving circle leaders and members from around the globe for a unique opportunity to celebrate, inspire one another, and learn together.

A number of experienced giving circle leaders are helping to co-design this gathering, so whether your giving circle has completed 20 grant cycles or you're still exploring what your circle could look like, you'll find something new and exciting at Amplifier's Summer Convening.

Throughout our convening, we will introduce you to just-launched, innovative giving circle models, fearless leaders making a difference, the power of Jewish tradition to inspire our giving practice, and more. Here are some of our program highlights:

Our evening panel, Giving Circles: Exploring Universalism & Celebrating Particularism, will illuminate how giving circles enable us to express our unique cultures, values and traditions; as well as what unites us in our giving practices. The panel will feature leaders from across the larger giving circle field:

  • Hali Lee, the founder of the Asian Women's Giving Circle in New York City

  • Kashif Shaikh, the founder of Pillars Fund, a Muslim giving circle based in Chicago

  • Sharon Levite-Vaknin, the director of Keren Baktana ("the little foundation"), a network of giving circles in Israel

  • Tracey Webb, the founder of Black Benefactors, a giving circle based in Washington, DC

  • Craig DeLaurier, a member of the New York City-based Natan Fund, a giving circle that funds Jewish innovation and founded Amplifier

For our full day together, we’ll gain new tools through skill-building workshops, forge connections through structured networking, and celebrate bright spots in the giving circle movement.

  1. Following our exploration of giving circles in diverse settings during our evening panel, Jewish educators Rabbi Avi Orlow and Jonah Canner will help us dive deeper to find our Jewish voices in this work, and identify specific opportunities to integrate Jewish values and wisdom into our giving circles.

  2. A presentation by Professor Rebecca Riccio from Northeastern University's Social Impact Lab on how we can use mapping technology to visualize the systems related to the issue areas we are funding, will help us gain a deeper understanding of where we can have the most philanthropic impact.

  3. We will also have sessions on how to be an ethical grantmaker, how to turn your circle into a sustainable community, and a chance to workshop your facilitation skills with fellow leaders.

All giving circle leaders and members, as well as those who are exploring giving circles for the first time are invited. We are thrilled and humbled by this growing giving circle movement, and look forward to bringing all of your stories, knowledge and energy together this July.
