Our speakers at this month's meeting, Gypsy Shannon Pete and Daniela Dwyer, will present on "The Navajo Nation: Past and Present."
Miss Gypsy Shannon Pete is the Community Outreach Coordinator for DNA People’s Legal Services. DNA is a non-profit law firm which provides free legal services to people with low income in New Mexico, Arizona and on the Navajo and Hopi nations in the Southwest. Miss Pete works in DNA’s main office in Window Rock, Arizona, which is also the capitol of the Navajo Nation.
Ms. Daniela Dwyer is the Litigation Director at DNA People’s Legal Services (www.dnalegalservices.org).
Gypsy Pete holds two Bachelors of Science degrees from Arizona State University. She also received a Masters of Legal Studies from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
Miss Pete is currently the 2022 First Runner-up Miss Navajo Nation, a traditional pageant which requires mastery of various cultural and linguistic skills. Originally from Rock Point, Arizona, Miss Pete is a fluent speaker of the Navajo language and has dedicated herself, personally and professionally, to educating the public about the Diné people and their culture. Her platform was bringing attention to murdered and missing indigenous women, men & children. Ms. Pete was also the official 2012-2013 Miss Teen Navajo. She lives on the Navajo Reservation and enjoys running and hiking.
Originally from El Paso, Texas, Ms. Dwyer is a Mexican-American attorney who has been practicing public interest law for 18 years. She recently joined the DNA staff in October of this year. Previously, she was the Director of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid’s Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Division.
