Description

American Roots Revival Concert Series at Buchanan Hall brings to life the pioneering genres of our American musical traditions by showcasing current original roots music songwriters and performers. From Appalachian folk and country, to the blues and gospel, to Jazz, the American Roots Revival celebrates the diverse musical landscape that birthed a uniquely American sound. In 2018, ARR is excited to feature 'Women Rockin' Roots Music'!!

Located at the intersection of the North and South, looking West to Appalachia and the Blue Ridge Mountains—not to mention its rich history of live music performances by the likes of Chauncey Brown, Duke Ellington, Patsy Cline, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot-- Buchanan Hall provides the perfect backdrop to celebrate how traditional American roots genres are being expressed by today’s musicians.

SHOWS

7.15 THE FLY BIRDS FOLK W/ Jiamie Pyles

THE FLY BIRDS are a trio made up of Elizabeth Baker and Mary Dunlap of Winchester VA on Banjo and Bass and Sarah Twigg of Barton MD on the guitar. Their unique vocals as well as original style of folk music is topped off with tasteful songwriting skills and a charming presence on stage and record.

JIAMIE PYLES' home grown appalachian finger picking style and love of old school country music, formed its roots in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With a voice that has been compared to Gillian Welch & Cat Power, Pyles’ original lyrics and unique sound are sure to remind you of a long lost love, to find hope in the dark corners of your experience, and to dare to love no matter how many times your heart has been broken.

9.23 PATTY REESE BAND BLUES W/Bess Putnam

PATTY REESE BAND An acoustic and intimate house concert, rocking the house at the Birchmere, commanding a standing ovation at Maryland's Strathmore Music Hall on the Woodstock tribute, that's where you might have seen Patty Reese and you can be sure she was lighting the place up with uninhibited effervescence. Her strong songwriting, dynamic vocals and solid guitar work make her a powerful solo act — or add in a mega talented band of music vets and lookout below!

BESS PUTNAM Growing up in the hills of Virginia, there is no memory that strays too far from a love of soil and song. We moved constantly but always in view of the blue mountains. My parents were both musicians , both seemingly from some other time and some other moutnains. The questions “when did you learn to sing?” always struck me as odd as I do not remember a time without music. My Daddy was a carpenter and cowboy and all that it implies. My Mama made things beautiful, usually with her song. Music was both luxury and necessity to us all. A constant thread weaving through and righting wrongs.

“A songbird does not sing because she has an answer, she sings because she has a song.” I am after nothing…no dollar amount, and certainly not interested in fame, but I was born into song and that, in itself, is legacy enough for me.

10.21 JANET EMMA & SEVEN WEST ALT-COUNTRY W/Sally Mae Foster

Janet Emma & Seven West hail from the Blue Ridge foothills but often feature DC's finest musicians on Live shows for a double shot of swinging' alt-country Americana with whip! Strong songwriting combined w/ killer musiciianship and rockin' energy make this band a barn dance favorite.

SALLY MAE FOSTER has been charming audiences with her antics for over a decade. And it isn't hard to see why. Who isn't a little bit amused by the idea of a girl who does four things at once to a fairly good rhythm? Foster tends to attempt the impossible with her range and abilities and is always looking out for the next corner of the envelope to push.

11.11 THE CROOKED ANGELS AMERICANA W/The Butchers Family Band

THE CROOKED ANGLES (Jamie & Amy Potter) are a husband and wife duo who serve up a distilled blend of bourbon infused Americana. From raucous, rambling blues, to poignant, delicate country ballads, we believe that soul of American music is rediscovered in every performance. We play ash-floored honky-tonks and pristine concert stages. Hell, we'll play your own living room if you tell Grandma you aren't putting out the good chairs.

THE BUTCHERS FAMILY BAND Traditional Old Timey, Country Blues, Bluegrass and Rock & Roll. Served Fast, Hot and Fresh. Just What Y'all Been Waitin' For!
