Event description

Description

This is an all-day event at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot and Museum in San Diego hosted by LA Lone Scouts for all Boys and Girls in Grades 6-12 for the 2019-2020 school year.

We will be completing requirements for two Merit Badges: Eagle-required CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION and elective AMERICAN HERITAGE, as well as having lunch in the Mess Hall with the Marines.

Please come prepared with signed blue cards plus the relevant worksheets in your Class A uniform. Scouts should bring their merit badge booklets along as well.

(I) Merit Badge: American Heritage

https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/American_Heritage

REQUIREMENTS COVERED AT THE WORKSHOP

2b. Scouts tour the museum to learn about how the Marine Corps has produced positive change in America.

2c. Scouts interview two Veterans (subject to availability of the Veterans who volunteer at the museum).

4b. Scouts research an event of historical importance. Scouts will interact with artifacts, photographs, documents, and books as part of their research. They will then create a comic or a movie about what they learned.

RESOURCES TO FULFILL THE REMAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR AMERICAN HERITAGE.

Please read the Merit Badge Book and write notes in the worksheet at http://usscouts.org/usscouts/mb/worksheets/American-Heritage.pdf

In order for the Merit Badge Counselor at MCRD to sign off on a Scout's blue card for American Heritage, the Scout must complete the remaining requirements for the badge. We strongly recommend that a parent or troop leader check a Scout's work (notebook or worksheets) before submitting it to the Merit Badge Counselor at MCRD on August 24.

(II) Merit Badge: Citizenship In The Nation

REQUIREMENTS COVERED AT THE WORKSHOP.

Citizenship in the Nation is another badge that requires Scouts do a lot of work. As with the American Heritage badge, the MCRD Museum assists Scouts in completing badge requirements they can not accomplish on their own.

The MCRD Museum helps Scouts fulfill the following requirements for the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge:

2a. Visit a place that is on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)

- The MCRD Museum and many buildings on MCRD are on the National Register of Historic Places

2c. Tour a Federal Facility

- MCRD is a Federal Facility

In order for the Merit Badge Counselor at MCRD to sign off on a Scout's blue card, the Scout must complete the remaining requirements for the badge. We strongly recommend that a parent or troop leader check a Scout's work (notebook or worksheets) before submitting it to the Merit Badge Counselor at MCRD.

**Keep in mind that for requirements 4d and 4e, the Scout must describe how life in the United States would be different without each amendment of the Constitution. Simply listing the amendment or writing a paragraph that talks about the amendments in general does not complete the requirement.
