Event description

Description

Join us for a fun exploration of American music from the 18th century to the 1960s in a series of four events (please make a separate reservation for each you plan to attend.) Parker Emerson (amateur musician and OISS staff member) will lead the group on guitar or mandolin. Participants are welcome to bring their own instruments (any kind, not just guitar) and we all get to sing! This program is designed for those who did not grow-up in the U.S., to learn about American culture and history through traditional lyrics and music. We will study the lyrics, and practice the chords and then have a group play and sing-along. You do not need to be a musician – this will be very informal. Children are welcome. We will listen to, sing and play music in the following styles/ periods:

  • September 19: Early Appalachia, Cowboy Folk, Industrial Revolution

  • October 17: Gospel, Blues, Jazz

  • November 7: 60’s Folk and Protest Songs

  • December 5: Special Guest Performance
