Description

Have a talent for coding, design or product development?
Want to create an app to help your community and the environment?

Join hack/reduce and the U.S Department of Energy for the American Energy Data Challenge "Apps for Energy II" Hackathon to develop apps that address some of America’s most important energy challenges.

Event Details:

From January – March 2014, the U.S. Department of Energy is holding an “Apps for Energy II” contest that will award the best web and mobile apps using the Department of Energy API's, standards and tools to solve some of America’s most important energy challenges.

To kick off the contest, we’re holding a hackathon where developers, designers and energy professionals can meet up, brainstorm ideas, form teams and start working on apps to submit to the contest. We will have representatives from the Department of Energy and other mentors on hand to help you get started, and we will be awarding prizes for the “best demos” at the end of the hackathon.

Teams that form up at the hackathon will be encouraged to submit their finished apps to the Contest by March 9, 2014 to be eligible for the Contest’s main cash prizes.

Event Schedule:

Saturday:

  • 12PM - Welcome!
  • 12:30PM - Lightning talks.
  • 1PM - Team formation. Pick an idea, discuss how to build an app and what features you will include, form teams or just start hacking
  • 6PM - End of the night. Go home, get some rest and come back the next day refreshed!
(ATTENTION: DUE TO SNOW, WE WILL BE CLOSING AT 6PM TONIGHT INSTEAD OF 9PM AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED.)

Sunday:

  • 9:30AM - The fun continues with the final day of the hackathon. Continue to work with your team to finish coding, designing and polishing your app. Mentors will be available throughout the final hours to help you with API questions, advice and other expertise. App submissions for door prize judging will be accepted throughout the day with a deadline of 6PM.
  • 2PM – Submission deadline and Demos! Each team gets three minutes to show what they built.
  • 3:15PM – Voting and Prizes
  • 4:00PM – Event Ends, but the teams can keep working on their apps to prepare for the final submission to the Contest by March 9, 2014.

Prizes:

Teams that participate in the hackathon and demo something they built will be eligible to win prizes. Additionally, teams can continue to work on their app and submit it to the Department of Energy’s American Energy Data Challenge by March 9, 2014 to be eligible for the big cash prize pot - over $70,000 in total prizes!

For the weekend hackathon at hack/reduce, there will be a total of $1,500 for the first place winner, and $1,000 for the second place winners.

Requirements:

The Apps for Energy II Challenge will award prizes for the best web and mobile applications that use one or more of the following APIs and standards:

  • Energy Information Administration Beta API
  • Green Button Data Standard
  • Buildings Performance Database API
  • Home Energy Score API
  • Commercial Building Asset Score API
