American Chestnut Pollination Workshop
Date and time
Controlled Pollination of American Chestnut
About this event
Wednesday June 23, 10 AM (Rain Date June 30) We will notify via email if the rain date will be utilized.
Join Sara Fern Fitzsimmons of the The American Chestnut Foundation for a workshop on how to control pollinate the American Chestnut. The workshop will take place at Edge of the Woods Native Plant Nursery, in our chestnut orchard.
The orchard is comprised of wild-type American chestnuts. The orchard does not contain any genetically modified trees, or trees that are hybrid back-crosses with the Chinese or Asian Chestnut.
Sara will spend 30 to 45 minutes showcasing various items related to the American Chestnut. Participants will learn about the breeding work being done in the research orchards and the current status of efforts to restore the American chestnut to the forests of the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Please bring a folding chair if you would like to be seated for this portion of the program. It will be held outside in the open air adjacent to our Chestnut Orchard.
Following the introduction, Sara will walk participants through the pollination process. She will bring orchard ladders for anyone who would like to climb into the tree for a close-up view of pollination.
