About this event
Where did artists historically look not only for a quick fling, but also a relationship partner? Art class, of course! For several 19th- and 20th-century American art-making couples, their art worked as a kind of dialogue that provided intimate insights into their relationship. What clues revealing the dynamics of these companionate marriages lie under the paint brush strokes? It’s time to revel in the art made by some of the country’s most noted artists, and dig deeper into the creators as people in relationships.
Join New York Adventure Club for a two-part series that explores the art and unique marriages of the great artist couples throughout American art history. In Part Two, we'll look deeply into the artworks of Edward and Josephine Nivison Hopper and their tumultuous, but long-lasting marriage.
Led by American Art Historian Rena Tobey, our artistic deep dive will include:
- An understanding of the dynamics of the companionate marriage, a modern concept of the coming together of like minds
- A consideration of the power dynamics in the marriage of Edward and Jo Hopper
- An analysis of paintings by each artist and what they reveal about the artists' attitudes about relationships
- A recognition of the complexities of artist fame in relation to career success
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Rena — any and all questions about these artworks are welcomed and encouraged!
