The Hampton Roads Community Foundation cordially invites you and a guest to an Understanding Hampton Roads forum as we examine the intersection of race, equity and education through the lens of the America To Me documentary. We will gather at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center on the campus of Norfolk State University.

  • 8 p.m. Panel Discussion

 * Note: The documentary contains some adult language.

The documentary series America To Me provides an inside look into Oak Park and River Forest High School in suburban Chicago. Produced and directed by Steve James, Academy Award nominated filmmaker and James Madison University alumnus, the series examines racial inequities within the educational system.

The forum will show the first episode and include a panel discussion featuring two of the documentary's stars. Plus Hampton Roads' own:

  • Rodney Jordan,Board member of Norfolk Public Schools
  • Dr. Aaron Spence, Superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools

About Understanding Hampton Roads: 

Understanding Hampton Roads is the Hampton Roads Community Foundation’s effort to advance civic engagement and racial equity in Southeastern Virginia. It includes forums on key topics to help build understanding and inspire action that brings people together to help improve life in our region.

Parking:

Due to ongoing contruction on the NSU campus attendees should enter through Gate 8 on Majestic Avenue and park in Lot 3. Attendees are not required to have a parking pass or decal.
