Event description

Description

The AMC NY-NoJ Young Members Chapter is proud to announce the 2019 Winter Weekend in Lake Placid, NY. The event was a huge success in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Nestled in the heart of New York's beautiful Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid is one of America's top winter destinations. The city played host to the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games, and features easy access to a wide range of winter outdoor activities. Tear up the slopes at nearby Whiteface Mountain, rent a pair of ice skates to glide across Mirror Lake, strap on the Nordic skis for miles of cross-country adventures, tame the blustery High Peaks, or relax by a warm fire. This trip is yours to make!

We will aim to follow our itinerary from previous years. Last year, over 30 intrepid NY-NoJ young members drove up to Lake Placid on the Friday before MLK Jr. weekend, stayed three nights at the Cascade Cross Country Ski Lodge just outside Lake Placid, and returned on Monday with many more great memories than they had before leaving.

The Cascade Cross Country Ski Lodge, our planned venue, features a half-dozen heated bunkrooms and showers. You can see more at: http://www.cascadeski.com/.

We're looking forward to a great trip!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please plan to arrange your own food, and please bring your own sleeping bags! Your ticket price includes a light breakfast, and we usually do group dinners, but lunch is often largely independent.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE/DISCLAIMER: Due to the prohibitive costs of trip insurance and the unlikelihood of a "storm of the century" scenario where we would need to cancel the trip entirely, you assume the risk of last-minute, weather-related cancellation without a refund when you buy your ticket. Again, it is highly unlikely that we will need to cancel, but given the winter weather, it needs to be an option for the safety of those attending. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact the organizer.

FAQs

What does my ticket fee cover?

Your ticket fee covers three nights of lodging at the Cascade XC Ski Center, plus a light breakfast at the lodge. Additional activities are yours to explore at their own individual prices (see above for some estimates). If there is enough interest, we can attempt to secure group rates for ski tickets, rentals, or other activities.

What should I bring to the event?

  • Winter weather gear (it gets quite cold in and around Lake Placid!)
  • If you wish, any gear for activities you'll be participating in (though most is available for rent).
  • A sleeping bag (however, the lodge is heated)
  • Toiletries
  • Light snack or breakfast food
  • A sense of adventure!

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

In previous years, we have organized group carpools. Please let the organizer know if you need a ride and we will do everything in our power to arrange! There is also an Adirondack Trailways bus which stops in Lake Placid each evening and runs once per day.

What's the refund policy?

Full refunds are available until November 30. Refunds of 67% of ticket price ($80) available between December 1 and 31 due to a deposit owed to the Ski Center. No refunds available January 1 or later. The only exception to this is if there is someone on the wait list able to take your spot.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
