Participants will become proficient in the roles and responsibilities, including plan of care, care management, patient education, telehealth, patient safety guidelines and protocols, as well as legal issues within ambulatory care nursing.

Nurses who are preparing for the Ambulatory Care Nurse certification exam and nurses who are new to Ambulatory Care and would like to increase their knowledge in this specialty area.


The goal of the Ambulatory Care Nursing Intensive CE Series is to provide nurses with information on ambulatory care, and a review for those preparing to sit for the Ambulatory Care Nurse certification exam. Upon completion of this series, attendees will be able to do the following:
  • Discuss the ambulatory care RN’s roles and responsibilities as described in the Ambulatory Care Nursing Conceptual Framework
  • List the components of effective care coordination
  • Describe how to develop an effective plan of care
  • Discuss effective patient education strategies
  • List the necessary skills to effectively administer telehealth nursing
  • Describe effective communication skills needed in the ambulatory care setting
  • Discuss components of ambulatory care quality management, including medication management, procedure development, and evidence-based practice
  • List characteristics of an effective ambulatory care RN leader
  • Discuss legal issues in ambulatory care nursing, including regulations, interstate practice, and reporting
  • Describe the ambulatory care nursing scope and standards of practice

Phone cancellations must be confirmed in writing. Cancellations received four weeks prior to the start date of the series will receive a full refund of the registration fee. Cancellations received after four weeks and up to seven days prior to the start of the series will be assessed a $50 processing fee. Cancellations received seven days prior or “no shows” will
not receive a refund. In the event that the program is cancelled, a full refund will be issued.

Denise Hannagan, RN-BC, BSN, MSN, MHA,
is the Ambulatory Education Program Coordinator at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in Los Angeles, CA. She is the facilitator and coordinator for the multiple outpatient specialty groups for the nursing orientation, assists with Joint Commission preparation, facilitation of clinic specific competency and skills monitoring. Denise has 29 years of healthcare experience ranging from front office staff to quality management, credentialing, case management, clinic staff nurse, and education. She received her BSN, MSN, and MHA all through the University of Phoenix, online program. Her leadership roles have been in the Educator Role at two large institutions, Carle in Urbana, Illinois and now at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Denise has been actively involved in several areas of ambulatory care, implementation and teaching the electronic medical record, development of an ambulatory nursing orientation, department specific orientation checklist , and actively involved with the shared governance model at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, promoting continuing education and certification. She is a member of the Leadership and Staff Education SIG for the American Academy of Ambulatory Nursing. From the start of her healthcare career her focus has been Ambulatory and promoting it as a nursing specialty.


E. Mary Johnson, RN-C, BSN, NE-BC,
has been a nurse leader for the past 35 years. She recently has become a Patient Navigator and Coach with the Center for Health affairs in Cleveland Ohio. Her professional commitments include serving in the American Nurses Credentialing Committee (ANCC) on the Content Expert panel for Nursing Leadership (2004- 2012). She is past President and Board member of AAACN (1996-2004), a former member of TJC Professional – Technical Advisory Board (1996-2001). She currently serves as an educator for AAACN Certification Review Course and the EmPowerU course for Visiting Nurses Association of Cleveland. She was the Director of Ambulatory Nursing at Cleveland Clinic before retiring in 1999. From 1999 to 2004, she served as the Administrator for Advanced Practice Nurses at Cleveland Clinic Foundation and then created the Career Coach for Nurses Program – focused on nurse retention and mentoring for Cleveland Clinic from 2005- 2011. She has written several articles on various Nursing issues and has authored the chapter for AAACN Core Curriculum Textbook on Patient Advocacy. She is a frequent lecturer on issues of nursing leadership, nursing retention, mentoring and nursing certification preparation.
