Event description
Amazonia is a pop-up event mirroring an Amazon Go store, but for a dystopian New York City where climate change has hit its apex.

About this event

Grey Area Collective’s first pop-up exhibit “Amazonia,” inspired by the shopping experience of an Amazon Go store, will exhibit fictional products that New Yorkers would need to survive in a dystopian climate-ravaged future, where basic needs such as water, food, power, and communication systems are on the verge of collapse.

New York City 2030
Like most cities around the world, the hot, heavy air is congested with particulate pollution. Your eyes are always watering. Your cough never seems to clear. Fresh air is now a distant memory. We’ve seen runs on the supermarket, runs on the banks, desperate bartering for food and water, and looting across the city. News reports caution us to stay indoors till dusk, when the temperature might finally dip below 100 degrees.

Welcome to Amazonia: a worst-case scenario store

Amazonia is a glimpse into a climate-ravaged future—one where the systems that provide food, water, shelter, safety, power, and communications to New Yorkers are teetering on the verge of collapse. Amazonia strives to make the scope and complexity of climate change tangible and specific, through the lens of everyday objects. It is an invitation to imagine futures that currently seem impossible.

Our opening night event will be held on October 30, 2021, from 6 pm - 9 pm, at Peninsula Art Space located at 352 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The Amazonia pop-up shop will be open:

October 30: 6pm to 9pm

October 31: 11am to 7pm

**Proof of vaxx and masks required.
