Event description

Description

After World War II, America’s religious denominations spread into the suburbs, spending billions on church architecture. At a free talk sponsored by Indiana Landmarks, Dr. Gretchen Buggeln will show how architects and suburban congregations envisioned Modernism might reinvigorate worship and community. Buggeln holds the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Chair in Christianity and the Arts at Valparaiso University. The talk precedes a mid-century church tour in Terre Haute on September 29.

Buggeln’s talk is held at United Campus Ministries, located in a building constructed in 1965 by the Wesley Foundation to serve as a campus ministry of the Methodist Church. Designed by the Indianapolis firm Lewis, Shimer & Associates, the building’s brick, concrete block, and glass skin gives it what one period newspaper called an “ultra-modern” appearance. Today, United Campus Ministries is an ecumenical ministry and continues to serve students and faculty from local universities.
