Last Post Ceremony:

The District has been granted permission to lay a wreath on behalf of the Alton & Petersfield District in commemoration to all those who laid down their lives in World War One.

Large crowds are expected for the 20.00 hrs ceremony at the Menin Gate. We have been granted three official places for the wreath laying. Mike Novell will provide details later. This is a nightly event and one that we can be proud to take part in and collectively witness.

We propose leaving the location for refreshments no later than 19.30 for a short walk to the Menin Gate to join the crowds for 8pm 'Last Post' ceremony and wreath laying.

The day's events end ideally in a local pub and return at leisure to Hampshire or those wishing to stay can book hotels and accomodation.

Local Ringers : Mieke and Ivan have a holiday house right opposite the church and offer good rates for visiting bellringers.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Individual cars have been picked as travel by minibus or coach was cost prohibitive for the day, sorry.

Cars can take 4-5 people so please volunteer if you have a spare seat or two!

Eurotunnel is the most expedient route to France. Crossing time 35 minutes. check-in is 30/40 mins before. We cannot guarantee delays although from experience this has been rare in recent months in terms of disruption.

There are no tolls in Northern France but make sure you adhere to local road laws. Basics include a breathalyzer & yellow vest. (no protesting please)

Currency is Euros in France and Belgium try to change in the UK as currency conversion rates at Folkestone are poor.

We will agree a figure for a donation to the Towers (Folkestone and Ypres) beforehand.

There will be a charge per head for late afternoon refreshments - details to follow.

Non-ringers there is plenty to see and do. Ypres is a beautiful city.

Don't forget your passports.

If using your mobile remember if you have roaming - it might be worth purchasing a bundle to cover you.

Don't forget travel insurance for the day and your car insurance cover.

Lastly.... Let's make it a great day! Bring non-ringers - friends - neighbours - use social media, take loads of photos & we look forward to seeing as many of you and having a great time!

Simon
