Event Details

Join the CCOF Foundation for a webinar on the alternatives to antibiotics for controlling fire blight disease!

This workshop is ideal for growers of organic apples and pears who need to prepare for or deal with a current fire blight infection in their orchards. Antibiotics that prevent this deadly disease are being phased out of the organic regulations. Understanding cultural and nutritional considerations as well how to use biologicals, copper, and lime-sulfur is more important than ever.
Please join us for this timely webinar workshop on several viable and important alternatives to antibiotic fire blight treatment. With the phase-out of antibiotic use for control of this nasty and economically damaging disease, it is crucial to have a number of blight-fighting strategies at your disposal. Learn how to use them in detail from our very qualified speakers.

About Our Speakers:

Ken Johnson

Ken Johnson is a professor of Plant Pathology at Oregon State University (OSU) in Corvallis, Oregon. At OSU since 1988, he teaches courses in introductory plant pathology and plant disease management. His research program is concerned with economically important diseases of horticultural crops with an emphasis on bacterial pathogens, including fire blight of pear and apple. With fire blight, Dr. Johnson's recent projects have focused on integrated non-antibiotic control, improved pathogen detection, and induction of acquired resistance in fruit trees to mitigate the damage caused by this disease.

Rachel Elkins

Rachel Elkins is a Pomology Farm Advisor in Lake and Mendocino Counties. She has a B.A. in International Studies (Asian Studies) from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California (1978); a B.S. in Agricultural Pest Management from the University of California, Berkeley (1981); a M.S. in Plant Protection and Pest Management from the University of California, Davis (1985); and a M.S. in Horticulture (Pomology) from the University of California, Davis (1989).
