Alternative Memory – Mika Fengler

Join us at South River Art Studios for our first experimental art event of 2022, Alternative Memory, an immersive audio visual installation by Mika Fengler.

Update: Sorry for the confusion all. 1 ticket is for the allotted time slot and you are able to bring a group of up to 25 people to that time slot. The 25 person limit is the capacity that allows for proper social distancing in the gallery.

Mika Fengler

Mika Fengler (b.1993) is an artist and photographer based in Atlanta, GA. She received her BFA from the Lamar Dodd School of Art, UGA (2016). She currently works in early childhood education through the Reggio Emilia approach which has informed her perception of how we learn and intake the world as a human species. She identifies as Okinawan-American, and currently studies Ryukyuan culture/history, exploring how colonization impacts our everyday relationships with one another and the Earth. The practice of art gives space for the navigation of the messy personal and collective relationships between war, dominance, relationships, and love. She has shown in several Atlanta shows and is currently working on a series of self-portraits. She works with intaglio, relief, collage, photography, watercolor and video.

Alternative Memory

I'm interested in how memory is informed and enforced through the American and Japanese education system and government/corporate narratives of history. Stories are often conflicting, memory becomes soft and malleable at the whim of the collective narrative. Manipulating photos and intaglio on kozo paper allows for a meditative state to connect with the mythology of history in Georgia and Okinawa. The photos and prints are cut, polyurethane is painted on to create a transparent effect, and then they are sewn or glued back together. Video projections on these materials travel through them and distort both video and printed images. For me, this is a reflection of how memory and printed history are unreliable, changing and at the core of who we are as a society.

South River Art Studios is located in East Atlanta near the banks of the South River; our studios offer affordable spaces for artists, designers and other creative professionals. Inhabiting a series of warehouses on 4 acres of converted industrial land, the project mission is to retain and strengthen Atlanta's contemporary art community and help it grow.

Our artists are diverse in their mediums, artistic goals, backgrounds, ages and experiences. This rich mix creates a culture of sharing, support and cross pollination of ideas and work. We believe that artist communities are an integral part of a developing city but are also incredibly beneficial to the artists that are a part of them.

Artists learn, grow and progress from one another’s feedback and critique. This empowers them to strive for more. Artists can explore new outlets for their work through collaboration and we hope to cultivate that kind of environment.

Covid Protocol

Indoor Spaces - Masks shall be worn over face indoors at all times.

Outdoor space - Masks are recommended but will not be required to be worn by attendees when they are outdoors. Please maintain social distancing.

The gallery space will be cleaned and sterilized between viewing appointments.
