Kansas City's LGBTQ+ Short Play Showcase Returns!

About this event

Kansas City's LGBTQ+ Short Play Showcase returns!

Presented with support from Charlotte Street Foundation

Join us for a great evening of seven short plays written by members of KC’s LGBTQ+ community!

This year’s plays include an insider’s look at an AA meeting, a voyeuristic tale of Jock Night at a gay bar, and lesbian submariners in a desperate search for a Selkie who might have the key to saving the world! Featuring works by John Adams, Joel Barrett, Diane Hightower, Kraig Kensinger, Kevin King, Em Swenson, and Adam Yarbrough.

COVID PROTOCOL: For the safety of our community, all patrons will be required to show proof of vaccination at the venue. Currently, we anticipate requiring patrons to wear face coverings during the performance.

VENUE: Unity Performing Arts Center (Lower Level of Unity Temple on the Plaza) - 707 W 47th St, Kansas City, MO 64112

THE PLAYS: (Some plays contain adult themes and partial nudity) Each play is presented at every performance.

The Damp, Dark Room Just Off the Parlor by John Adams (he/him) - In Victorian England, a junior investigator with Scotland Yard investigates a wealthy couple's bizarre murder. But danger looms from within the couple's home -- and within their troubled son.

Pink Baby. Blue Blanket. by Joel Barrett (he/him) - Our narrator gets a blanket at birth and spends half a lifetime torn between the comfort and the restrictions it brings.

Operation Find the Selkie by Diane Hightower (she/her) - In the not-too-distant future, lesbian submariners Captain Morgan Morgan and Corpsman 1st Class Elena Marie search for a Selkie who may hold the key to saving the planet and humankind.

Late Nite Interaction by Kraig Kensinger (he/him) - Strange bedfellows lead two men to navigate the insecurities of sexual desire.

What Happens at Jock Night by Kevin King (he/him) - Josh is at Jock Night at a gay bar for the first time. His friends think he’s overdressed.

Step Zero by Em Swenson (she/her) - An insider look at an AA meeting. Ryan walks into their first meeting and immediately questions whether they should join this quirky group.

All the Best Ones by Adam Yarbrough (he/him) - What’s the perfect recipe for a stressful formal dinner? Meeting your boyfriend’s mother and ex-wife.
