Event description

Description

Come explore the landscape around the historic New Almaden mercury mine. Mining ceased in 1976, but New Almaden was once the 2nd largest producer of mercury in the world. (That's how the San Jose Mercury News got its name!)
Our history hike takes us through the rolling foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. We'll enjoy wonderful views of downtown San Jose and the Diablo Mountain Range to the east and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west.

TOTAL DISTANCE
This is a moderate hike of about five miles with an elevation change of 650 feet.

WEATHER POLICY
Rain cancels.

COST
Free, RSVP required.

WHERE TO MEET
We'll assemble at the staging area for the Hacienda entrance. The Hacienda entrance is at the end of the Almaden Expressway which proceeds another 3 miles along Almaden Road through the town of New Almaden to the unpaved staging area on the right. [map]

NOTES
Bring water, snack or lunch, dress in layers, and wear good hiking shoes. Bring poles if you normally use them. If you have questions about this outing, email Ken Lavin or phone him at 415-543-6771 x321.
