Atlanta, GA embraces art phenom Hebru Brantley’s ‘Penny Candy’ exhibition
Artist and visionary Hebru Brantley’s client list includes Jay-Z, LeBron James, Lil Wayne, Nike, Swizz Beats, Red Bull, Tyra Banks, Lollapalooza, Q-Tip, and Russell Simmons to name a few. His work is critically acclaimed and exhibited worldwide everywhere from the popular Art Basel show in Miami, Florida, to the Tim Yarger Gallery in Beverly Hills, and the American Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. And now Hebru brings his eclectic talents to Atlanta with a masterful art show affectionately titled, Penny Candy. This complimentary event, hosted by AllWays Open Creative, Skyy Vodka, Sam Flax and the Loews Atlanta Hotel, will be held onat the Lowes Atlanta Hotel in Midtown Atlanta (1065 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30309).
Hebru will exhibit over 40 paintings, drawings and sculptures in the Lowes scenic event space overlooking midtown. Entertainment will be provided by Atlanta's notable body movers DJ Kemit and Sound Table’s DJ Karl Injex, complimentary candy themed Skyy Vodka cocktails and delectable hors d'oeuvres will be served, and, of course, an assortment of penny candy. All of Hebru Brantley’s pieces will be available for purchase during the exhibit. Art collectors are highly encouraged to attend.
Hebru’s stroke of the brush, spray of the nozzle, and shaping of his sculptures has made him one of the most prolific and trailblazing artists of his time. A 32 year-old native of Chicago’s Bronzeville section, Hebru’s self-titled Afro-Futurist movement is greatly influenced by the enthrallments of his childhood years, particularly during the mid to late 80s. Comic books, iconic street artists Jean Michel Basquiat, Kaws and Keith Haring, basketball star Michael Jordan, Star Wars, and seminal hip-hop being spun on SP 1200 turntables are just a few of the inspirations Hebru uses to create pieces that teleport his audience to a time when everything was pretty much, well, fresh. Oh, and let’s not forget those sweet temptations that even a grade school kid could afford at the local corner store: penny candy.
“Penny candy relates to when you were a shorty, things were least expensive, and the youthful wonderment of the times,” Hebru explains. “Basically, it’s the overall fill of youthfulness which correlates to the aesthetics of my work.”
Hebru is no stranger to Georgia’s capital. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in film from Clark Atlanta University, and has a background in design and media illustration. It is now time for Hebru to revisit his second home in grand fashion. “Atlanta is where I started my art journey and represents the youthful essence of my own career,” Hebru reflects. “This city provided my experiences and the opportunity to grow into the artist that I am today. Ultimately, I love the community sense of the city because there is a sense of wanting to find the next and the new. I'm returning new.”
