Employment Law Update

Bio: Kara M. Craig is a Staff Attorney for Archbright where she provides advice, counsel, training and representation for members on the entire range of employment and labor law issues.  Kara joined Archbright in 2013 and has 16 years of experience as an attorney. 

 Summary:

  • Update on federal, state and local wage and hour laws and application by the courts
  • Guidance from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on discrimination in the workplace/  Cse studies will be discussed
  • Washington’s Paid Sick and Parental Leave
  • Washington’s Paid Family and Medical Leave

Immigration change under the Trump Administration

 Bio: Davis Bae is the Managing Partner of the Seattle office of Fischer Phillips.. His practice focuses on providing effective immigration solutions for companies in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the United States. His practice addresses employment based visas, permanent residents and immigration worksite compliance for industry leading companies. 

Summary: This presentation will address the latest in the changes to the U.S. immigration policy since the Trump Administration has taken office. Changes in the interpretation of immigration law and enforcement suggest employers must carefully document their compliance with immigration law regardless of whether they perceive themselves as having any foreign employees.  Information will be provided to assist you in assessing, documenting and improving your compliance; providing attendees with a simple self-assessment and sample immigration policy. 


Digging Into Background Checks and the Legal Interview

Bio: Pamela Helman is an experienced labor and employment attorney.  She advises both large and small employers on employment matters, including wage and hour, discrimination and harassment, disability and accommodation. She provides workplace training, drafts employee handbooks, policies, and employment agreements. 

Summary: Preventing multi-million dollar lawsuits and settlements; this session will address the core – and complex – logistical, contractual and practical issues in conducting background checks / interviews and evaluating and potentially transferring liabilities related to them. In this session, we will cover topics such as:

  • New case law raising and timing of pre-adverse and adverse action notices
  • Proper communication among employers, background check companies and insurers
  • The shared risk and liability when agencies or operations conduct background checks
  • Technical limitations
  • Managing the legal interview
